But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act- they will be blessed in their doing.
James 1: 22-25
These words from James confront us with a question we must all ask ourselves- are we merely hearers of the word of God, or are we doers? The month of September provides us with an excellent opportunity to consider whether we are hearers or doers.
As our lives and families return from summer and vacations to school and work, it is time for us to recommit to being both hearers and doers of the Word. It is time for us to recommit to our faith and our Savior. It is time for us to recommit to our church. Each week, Fries Memorial Moravian provides us with the opportunities to be both hearers and doers of the Word.
This fall will bring about some exciting new ideas and opportunities for both hearing the Word of God and doing the work to which we are called. Sunday School will offer a new, intergenerational Family Class and we will begin a new Children’s Worship for our elementary age children. And we will have a Wednesday evening supper and study beginning in late October to help us prepare for the Advent season
And these are just the new things that we are doing. We also will be continuing with many of our ongoing ministry opportunities: Sunday Morning Worship; Children’s, Junior, and Adult Choirs; 2 Chicken Pie groups; Youth Fellowship; church retreat; collecting peanut butter for Sunnyside; CROP Walk; Fries Fellowship; etc.
On Sunday September 13, we will have the opportunity to get our recommitment to be both hearers and doers of the Word off to a great start- our Sunday School will have a Kick-Off Breakfast at 10:00 and during our Morning Worship, we will share in a Cup of Covenant to renew our commitment to God and to our church. The day will end with a concert by the WS Community Band at 5:00 on the church lawn.
